Pierre Magontier présentera un séminaire intitulé : The Unintended Consequences of Post-Disaster Policies for Spatial Sorting.

Résumé / abstract  : We provide new empirical and theoretical evidence on the spatial consequences of post-disaster policies exploiting the timing of hurricanes relative to Election Day in the US. We show that hurricanes close to Election Day lead to oversized post-disaster grants and, consequently, attract large shares of the population to the impacted areas. We document that this effect has sizable implications for the spatial distribution of economic activity. We then introduce the relationship between political cycles and post-disaster grants as a new feature in a dynamic spatial general equilibrium model and quantify its importance for the aggregate economy.
