 Discretization is the division into classes and thus the grouping of values of a quantitative statistical variable ([[english:glossary:cardinal|cardinal]] character type), often with a view to mapping. The transformation produces a [[english:glossary:ordinal|ordinal]] variable (level of measurement), since there is no longer a relation of order between classes. This is a very important operation because depending on the thresholds of discretization (the limits of the classes) selected, the appearance of the phenomenon on the map can vary significantly. The most common methods of discretization are grouping of [[english:glossary:equalinterval|equal interval classes]], [[english:glossary:equalsize|classes of equal size (quantiles)]], classes based on the [[english:glossary:mean|mean and standard deviation]], or according to natural breaks or in the [[english:glossary:jenks|Jenks algorithm]].
