====== Statistical variable ====== The attributes associated with vector entities and stored in the columns of a DBMS table or cells of a raster grid can be considered as statistical variables (also called characteristics), with which it is possible to implement all conventional statistical analyses that are one-, two- or multivariate. However, few GIS software for vector modes have functions other than the computation of basic statistical parameters. More sophisticated analyses require the mobilization of specialized tools. Attribute data formats are usually easily exportable to statistical analysis tools. In cartography, we often use the concept of level of measurement to differentiate statistical characteristics. There are three basic levels of measurement: nominal, ordinal and cardinal.
