Opensource software or data is not linked to a proprietor, and thus can be used and even in some cases freely modified. If it is a software, the source code (program) is accessible and editable. The opposite of opensource is proprietary. There are proprietary GIS software and opensource GIS software. Opensource does not necessarily mean free and there are different licenses that may more or less limit the possible uses of an opensource product.
