Résumé / abstract  : It has been standard practice in neoclassical economics to equate choice with welfare. Following the evidence on bounded rationality, problems of self-control, among other arational behaviours, several authors have proposed behavioural proxies of welfare that equate some (as opposed to all) choices with subjective welfare. In this paper, I first distinguish two prominent proxies that are based on choices that remain constant across context and time (context-independent choices) and choices that are made after rational deliberation (reason-based choices). I then propose an alternative proxy based on choices that individuals would want themselves to repeat when reflecting upon their past behaviour (confirmed choices). I articulate three complementary arguments that, I claim, support confirmed choices as a more reliable proxy of subjective welfare than the previous two. Finally, I discuss the implications of these arguments for behavioural policy programs that rely on nudges or boosts.
