What drives inventor’s mobility across European urban areas ?

Thème de recherche / Main topics : Migration, Economic geography, Innovation, International trade

Résumé / abstract  :

Highly skilled professionals are regarded one of the main driver for the economic development of cities through their effect on technological and innovative capabilities. Unlike other production factors, skilled individuals are highly mobile and tend to cluster within a limited number of urban areas. Therefore, a crucial question is what factors shape this flow and influence the divergent levels of economic development across urban areas. Building on these considerations, this paper investigates the determinants of the geographical mobility of inventors. Specifically, a spatial interaction model is used to analyse how job opportunities, amenities, and socio-professional networks influence the migration decisions of inventors between urban areas, measured by Larger Urban Zones.
