Opéra et caricature
The study of Parisian fin-de-siècle press caricature of opera is a fascinating case-study in which theatre and music of international renown was treated via a visual and textual form of popular mediation. Through the parody and travesty of the opera, caricaturists used their art not only for entertainment, but also as a therapeutic tool for the promotion of moral and aesthetic integrity. Thus ever-increasingly sophisticated means of constructing and deconstructing images proved to be vital for amusement, self-analysis and auto-censorship.
Press drawing from papers such as Le Journal amusant, La Vie parisienne, Gil Blas illustré, Le Triboulet, Le Chat noir, Le Journal and La Silhouette will be studied by students to investigate the ways in which the transformation from sung text to written word, from theatrical spectacle to drawn image were achieved.
