Opera on Film (in English)
When operatic spectacle is transposed to the medium of film, the issues of voice, both spoken and sung, becomes complex. Dealing in diegetic and non-diegetic voice, embodied and disembodied voice, the genre of film opera presents a unique case study of narrative, the mutiple identities which inhabit it, and the complex and flexible relationship between voice, image and subjectivity.
Building on the work of Marcia Citron (Opera on Screen (Yale University Press, 2000), When Opera Meets Film (Cambridge University Press, 2010)), students will investigate these issues in relation to two opera films, both of which involve spoken and sung text, Carmen (Rosi, 1984) and The Tales of Hoffmann (Powell and Pressburger, 1951). Both films also use dance, in particular The Tales of Hoffmann, in which the primacy of voice and text is frequently challenged by spectacle and image which can be better conveyed by cinema.
